Changes to Hume Bank cheques

At Hume Bank, we’re committed to keeping you informed and supported. That’s why we want to let you know about an upcoming change to the way you bank with us.
As part of the Australian Government’s plan to phase out cheques by September 2029, we’ll be taking the next step in reducing cheque-based payments.

What’s changing

From 1 June 2026, we will no longer be issuing Hume Bank cheques. After this date, you won’t be able to request or purchase a bank cheque in any of our branches.

Why is this happening?

Cheque use has continued to decline, with many customers now choosing faster, more secure payment options. This change supports a shift to modern payment methods that are better suited to today’s banking needs.

What you can do to prepare

Now is a good time to think about how often you use bank cheques and whether alternative digital payment methods may better suit your needs, such as:

  • Electronic funds transfers
  • BPAY®
  • Card payments

If you’re unsure which option is right for you, we’re here to help.
